You Cannot Be Serious, David Yarrow, artist

This weekend, internationally renowned photographer David Yarrow returns to Durango for a special reception and book signing at Sorrel Sky Gallery. The event is free and open to the public and takes place on Friday, January 9, from 5:30–8 p.m.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Yarrow’s remarkable career began early, capturing an iconic image of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup trophy at the 1986 FIFA World Cup Final. After a successful career in finance, he returned to photography, ultimately becoming one of the world’s bestselling photographers with a bold, cinematic, and unmistakably his own style.

Yarrow is known for his evocative black-and-white photographs that tell stories rather than record moments. Spanning wildlife, landscapes, and elaborately staged narrative scenes, his work feels immersive and theatrical. In recent years, his focus has turned toward the American Wild West—creating visual tales that entertain, provoke curiosity, and invite viewers into a larger mythic landscape.

Durango and the surrounding Southwest continue to inspire Yarrow’s storytelling approach. While in town for new photo shoots, Sorrel Sky Gallery will feature his latest works, including new storytelling pieces that weave Western themes and regional icons into his ongoing visual narrative.

Beyond the gallery, Yarrow’s work carries a strong philanthropic thread. Since 2018, sales of his photography have raised more than $15 million for causes including conservation and cancer research—an extension of his belief that powerful images can make a meaningful impact.

This weekend’s event offers a rare opportunity to experience Yarrow’s newest work up close, hear the stories behind the images, and meet the artist in person. For those drawn to the West, to visual storytelling, or to photography that pushes beyond the expected, this reception is a moment worth stepping into.
