Follow the yellow brick road to the Mancos Opera House for a magical evening celebrating creativity, imagination, and community. Mancos Youth Theatre brings a fresh and thoughtful twist to The Wizard of Oz with a musical production that uniquely weaves in the art of shadow puppetry—adding depth, wonder, and visual storytelling to this beloved classic.
Shadow puppetry is one of the world’s oldest forms of storytelling, with roots stretching back thousands of years across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Long before elaborate sets and special effects, stories were brought to life through light, silhouette, and movement—inviting audiences to engage their imagination as much as their eyes. By blending this ancient art form with a familiar musical, the students of Mancos Youth Theatre honor tradition while giving new life to a timeless story.
This free, community-wide event showcases the talent and dedication of Mancos youth and invites audiences of all ages to experience the joy of live theater created by young performers.
Special thanks to the Ballantine Family Fund and Colorado 21st Century Community Learning Centers for their generous support of the Mancos Youth Theatre program—helping ensure arts education continues to thrive for local youth.
