More Than a Gallery: The Creative Energy of Zu

There’s something undeniably invigorating about the vision behind Zu Gallery in Cortez — even before you step inside. It’s not just another art space. It’s a dream brought to life by someone who personally knew what it felt like to need something hopeful, human, and creative to hold onto. What began as a personal project to highlight positive stories from Montezuma County has blossomed into a vibrant community space where art, people, and imagination come together.

The gallery’s founder, marketer, and event producer, Jodi Jahrling, originally aimed to create a hyperlocal newspaper that showcased the beautiful and unifying stories of life in the area. She named it The Daily ZU — a playful twist on “the Zu,” her nickname for Montezuma County — imagining a platform that would bring people together through uplifting content. However, after a serious health challenge halted her creativity and plans, she returned to that project as a source of inspiration and purpose.

From there, Zu Gallery expanded beyond just a website. Jodi wanted a physical space that embodied the same sense of belonging and community her online project celebrated. So she created a place where art isn’t just displayed — it’s experienced. Zu Gallery combines a wine lounge, a rotating visual art collection, a photography studio, and a versatile makerspace that hosts workshops, creative gatherings, and community events. Its mission has always been to create experiences that inspire creativity, bring people together, and foster a sense of belonging — a mission you can feel throughout the space.

What makes Zu Gallery truly special is its commitment to accessibility and involvement. Instead of keeping art behind glass, this space welcomes people into the creative process, whether through hands-on classes, community collaborations, or a friendly atmosphere for enjoying art with a glass of wine or craft beer. Local artists, emerging talents, and curious visitors all find a place to connect, create, and celebrate.

In a small town, Zu Gallery stands out as a hub of creative energy — a place built from a desire to uplift, engage, and imagine together. More than just a gallery, it functions as a gathering space where ideas are exchanged, creativity is encouraged, and community forms in real time. Anchored in an origin story rooted in connection and optimism, Zu Gallery has become an important part of Cortez’s creative scene, showing the power of art when it is open, participatory, and deeply human.

For a closer look at the people and ideas shaping Zu Gallery, there’s a great video conversation worth watching. Studio owners Yves LF Giraud of Studio M31 and Mr Bill of Nautilus Studio sit down with Jodi Jahrling and Chris of Zu Gallery to talk about how the space came to be and where it’s headed. The interview is paired with beautifully captured footage by RJ McKay and is part one of a two-part series.
