Page One: The Power of a Single Page

by The Publisher

There’s a grounding feeling in hearing a page of a book read aloud. Just one page—only a few paragraphs—can draw you into a story, introduce a voice you’ve never heard before, or remind you why reading matters. Page One, a locally produced program on KSUT Public Radio, is based on that simple idea. Each week, a single page from a book is read aloud, giving listeners a quiet moment with language, storytelling, and imagination.

Each reading also serves as an invitation. If a page sparks your interest, you’re encouraged to visit your local library and borrow the book to continue the story. It’s a gentle nudge toward curiosity—and a reminder that libraries are places where stories live, waiting to be discovered.

In a world that often feels loud and rushed, Page One offers a brief pause. It doesn’t ask for much time or attention. You don’t need to know the author or the book. You listen—and in doing so, you’re reminded of the joy of being read to.

Produced by KSUT in partnership with the Durango Public Library, Page One connects listeners to books, stories, and the simple pleasure of reading.

What I love about Page One is how simple it is. There’s no explaining, no dissecting, no telling you what to think. You listen. You might recognize the author, or you might not. You could be drawn in right away, or you might enjoy hearing a voice read a page aloud. Either way, you’re given space to feel curious, to lean in, or let the words wash over you.

Reading aloud is its own kind of art. The pacing, the pauses, the tone of a voice—all of it shapes how a page lands. In that way, Page One sits comfortably at the intersection of literary and performing arts, honoring storytelling as something meant to be heard as well as read.

For Arts Perspective, Page One emphasizes a shared belief in small, meaningful moments of creativity. Not every story needs to be told all at once. Sometimes, one page is enough to open a door — to a new author, a forgotten book, or a renewed love of reading.

At its core, Page One is about connection: to stories, to books, and to the places that make reading accessible to everyone. It reminds us that you don’t need much time to engage with art—you just need a willingness to listen.

Page One airs Mondays at 9:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 7:56 a.m. on KSUT Public Radio, and can also be streamed online at KSUT.
